Writer Content Agreement
Last updated
What writers confirm every time they create a story or save a chapter on Moonlit: that the work is theirs to publish, what rights they give us, and what they are responsible for.
About this agreement
This agreement is between you (“the writer”) and MayR Labs, which runs Moonlit (“Moonlit”, “we”, “us”). It applies each time you create a story, save a chapter or submit work on Moonlit, and it works alongside the Terms of Use, Community Guidelines, Content Ratings and Child Safety standard. If you do not agree to it, do not submit content.
You own the work
By creating a story or saving a chapter you confirm that:
- you wrote the content yourself, or you hold every right needed to publish it on Moonlit;
- it does not copy, adapt or borrow from anyone else’s work without their written permission;
- you have not given exclusive rights to anyone else that would stop you granting Moonlit the rights below.
You keep ownership of your content. Moonlit does not buy it or take it over.
The licence you give us
You give Moonlit a non-exclusive, worldwide licence, for as long as your content is on Moonlit and for a reasonable period afterwards while we complete payments and records, to host, store, display, reproduce, translate for accessibility, narrate (by recording or text-to-speech), distribute offline, and promote your content in the app, the website and our marketing, including with excerpts and cover images.
Because the licence is non-exclusive, you remain free to publish your work elsewhere unless you have agreed otherwise with someone else.
You are responsible for it
You are solely responsible for the content you submit, including any claim that it infringes copyright, trademark, privacy or other rights, or that it is defamatory or unlawful. Moonlit does not check content for ownership and is not liable for infringement by writers.
If you used AI tools to help write the content, you confirm that you are allowed to use their output commercially, that you have read and edited it, and that it does not reproduce someone else’s work. Moonlit’s own AI writing tools, if you use them, are there to assist you: you remain the author and are responsible for the result.
Honest ratings and warnings
You agree to set an accurate age rating and add accurate content warnings. See the Content Ratings page. Content that does not match its rating may be re-rated, hidden or removed. Repeated or deliberate misrating can lead to your account being suspended.
What you may not publish
You may not publish anything that breaks our Community Guidelines or Child Safety standard, and in particular:
- any sexual content involving minors, in any form, which is reported to the authorities;
- hate speech, content that promotes violence or terrorism, or that glorifies self-harm;
- other people’s private information, or content that defames a real person;
- content that is illegal where it is read, or that infringes another person’s rights.
Fictional characters, settings and themes are welcome. Presenting real people’s private lives as fact, or using a real child’s identity, is not.
Editorial review
Moonlit’s editors may review your stories and chapters before and after they are published. We may ask for changes, hold a chapter, change a story’s rating, or decline to publish it. We are not obliged to publish anything, and review does not mean we have checked that the work is original.
Earnings
Where your stories earn income through Moonlit, the amounts, how they are calculated and when they are paid are shown in your writer dashboard and in any written terms agreed with you. We may withhold payment while a rights claim or a breach of these terms is being looked into, and where payments were made in error or for fraudulent activity. You are responsible for your own taxes.
Removal and takedowns
If someone credibly claims that your content infringes their rights, or it breaks our rules, Moonlit may remove or hide it without notice, suspend your writer account, and withhold earnings while we resolve the claim. We will tell you what was reported where we are allowed to, and you may respond.
You agree to cover Moonlit’s reasonable costs, including reasonable legal fees, arising from a claim that your content infringes someone else’s rights or from your breach of this agreement, to the extent the law allows.
Withdrawing content
You can unpublish a story or withdraw a chapter at any time from your stories page. Readers who have already unlocked a chapter may keep access to the copy they have for personal use for a reasonable time, and we may keep a copy for records and legal reasons. Withdrawal does not cancel obligations that arose before it, such as payments already made.
Your confirmation is recorded
Each time you tick the confirmation box, Moonlit records that you agreed, which version of this agreement, who agreed and when. If this agreement changes in a significant way, we will ask you to accept the new version before you can publish again.
Ending this agreement
You can stop at any time by withdrawing your content and closing your writer account. We may suspend or end your writer account if you breach this agreement, put readers at risk, or if the law requires. Provisions that by their nature continue, such as ownership, responsibility for your content, payments and limits on liability, survive.
Governing law
This agreement is governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, subject to any mandatory rights you have where you live.
