Child Safety
Last updated
Moonlit is read by people of all ages. This is our standard for protecting children and young people, how we prevent harm, and how to report a concern.
Our commitment
We have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE), and for any content or behaviour that puts a child at risk on Moonlit. This page sets out the standards we hold ourselves to. It applies to our app, our website, our writers and our team, and it sits alongside our Kids Policy, Community Guidelines and Content Ratings.
What is not allowed
Moonlit prohibits, without exception:
- any sexual content involving children, or content that sexualises children in any form, in stories, comments, names, images or anywhere else on the Service;
- grooming, attempts to contact children for sexual or other harmful purposes, or sharing a child’s personal information;
- links to, or requests for, child sexual abuse material (CSAM);
- anything that encourages or normalises the abuse of children.
Writers who publish this kind of content for kid are permanently banned and reported. There is no appeal for it.
How we protect younger readers
Age-based access
Your date of birth decides which stories you can see. Every story is rated by our editors, and we automatically flag stories whose content appears to be stronger than their rating. Readers under 13 see only Kids only stories. Teens see Teens only and Teens+ stories. Adult only stories are shown only to readers aged 18 and over.
No way for strangers to contact children
Moonlit has no private messaging between users and no public profiles. Readers under 13 cannot post, read or like comments, cannot leave ratings, and receive no push notifications. Teens and adults can comment on stories, and comments are moderated.
No ads and no purchases for children
Kids accounts show no ads and cannot buy anything.
Moderation
Stories are reviewed by our editors before they are published. Comments and reports are reviewed by our moderation team, who are trained to prioritise anything involving a child. We use a mix of automated flags and human review.
Limits of age checks
Ages on Moonlit are self-declared. We cannot verify every birthday, which is why we encourage parents to set up and supervise a child’s account and to use the controls on their device.
For parents and guardians
- Set up Moonlit with your child and enter their real birthday. That is what keeps them in the Kids library.
- If your child entered the wrong birthday, contact us and we will correct it after verification.
- You can ask to see, correct or delete your child’s data, or close their account. See the Kids Policy.
- Use your phone’s own parental controls to restrict purchases and app downloads.
Reporting a concern
If you see something that puts a child at risk, report it right away:
- tap the report button on the story, or the flag on the comment;
- or use Help & Support in the app to contact our safety team directly. Say that it concerns child safety so that it is escalated.
If a child is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first.
What we do with reports
We review reports involving children as a priority, remove the content or restrict the account where appropriate, and keep the evidence the law requires. We report child sexual abuse material and suspected exploitation to the relevant authorities and cooperate with law enforcement. We never tell the person who reported.
Review of this standard
We review this standard and our processes regularly and whenever the law or best practice changes.
