Terms of Use
Last updated
The rules for using Moonlit: who can use it, how coins and Premium work, what you can post, and what we promise in return. By creating an account or reading on Moonlit, you agree to them.
About these terms
Moonlit is an app and website for reading and listening to serialized stories, run by MayR Labs (“Moonlit”, “we”, “us”). These Terms of Use are a contract between you and us. They apply to the Moonlit app, our website and anything else we offer under the Moonlit name (together, the “Service”).
Please read them together with our Privacy Policy, Community Guidelines, Content Ratings, Child Safety page and, if you are under 13, our Kids Policy. Those documents are part of this agreement. If you do not agree to them, please do not use Moonlit.
Who can use Moonlit
Moonlit is for readers of all ages, but what you can see and do depends on your age:
- Under 13: you get a Kids account. It shows only Kids only stories and has no ads, comments, ratings, push notifications, coins or purchases. A parent or guardian should read these terms with you.
- 13 to 17: you can read Teens only and Teens+ stories, use comments and ratings, and use coins and Premium. If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or guardian knows you use Moonlit and agrees to anything you buy.
- 18 and over: you can read Teens+ and Adult only stories, and you can limit your library to Teens+ in Profile.
You must be old enough to form a binding contract where you live, or have a parent or guardian’s permission to use the Service. We may ask you to confirm your age or your parent’s permission if something does not add up.
Your account
You can browse as a guest or create an account with an email address or Google. Either way you must:
- give an accurate date of birth. It decides which stories you see, and you confirm it is accurate when you start. Giving a false date of birth is a breach of these terms and can lead to your account being restricted or closed;
- keep your sign-in details private. You are responsible for what happens on your account;
- tell us promptly if you think someone else has used your account;
- use one account per person. Accounts cannot be sold, transferred or shared.
A guest account is stored on your device and has no email address. If you delete the app or lose your phone, a guest library may be lost. Create an account to keep your library across devices.
You can delete your account at any time from Profile › Settings. See the Privacy Policy for what happens to your data.
Stories, ratings and content warnings
Every story carries one of four ratings: Kids only, Teens only, Teens+ or Adult only, plus content warnings where they apply. Ratings are set by our editors and writers before a story is published and are explained on the Content Ratings page. They are a guide, not a guarantee: tastes and sensitivities differ, so please read the warnings before you start.
Kids only stories are hidden from teens and adults, and Teens only stories are hidden from kids and adults. If you think a story is wrongly rated, tell us using the report button on the story page.
Free chapters, coins and Premium
Free chapters. The opening chapters of each story are free. The number is shown on the story page and can differ between stories.
Coins. Coins unlock paid chapters. You can buy coins through Google Play (or the Apple App Store when available on your device), receive them as a gift, a promo code or a daily reward, and receive them with Premium. Coins are not available to Kids accounts.
- Coins have no cash value, cannot be exchanged for money, and cannot be transferred between accounts.
- Purchased coins do not expire. Coins that come with Premium are credited each billing period and expire if your subscription ends.
- Unlocking a chapter spends coins and gives you access to that chapter for as long as the story is available on Moonlit. If a story is withdrawn, we may remove access to it.
Watching ads. Teens and adults may be offered the chance to watch a rewarded ad to unlock a chapter. Ads are never shown to Kids accounts.
Premium. Premium is a monthly or yearly subscription billed by Google Play or the Apple App Store. It renews automatically until you cancel it in your store account, at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep Premium until the period you paid for ends. Deleting the app or your Moonlit account does not cancel a subscription.
Prices and taxes. The price you pay is the price shown by the store at checkout, including any taxes. We may change prices or what Premium includes; a change to an active subscription takes effect at your next renewal and the store will tell you first where the law requires it.
Refunds. Purchases are handled by Google or Apple, so refund requests go to them under their policies. Where the law gives you a right to a refund, nothing in these terms takes it away. Coins already spent on an unlocked chapter are not refundable unless the chapter was unavailable or defective, in which case contact us and we will put it right.
Using Moonlit properly
You agree not to:
- break the law, or use Moonlit to harm, harass, threaten or exploit anyone, especially children;
- post content that breaks our Community Guidelines;
- copy, scrape, download in bulk, redistribute or republish stories, covers, audio or other content, or use them to train or fine-tune machine learning models;
- bypass or tamper with paywalls, ads, age settings, device checks or any other security measure, or use bots, emulators, modified apps or scripts to do so;
- claim rewards or coins you are not entitled to, or abuse promo codes and refunds;
- interfere with the Service, probe it for weaknesses without our written permission, or overload it;
- impersonate another person, or give false information.
Offline downloads let you read on your own device while your account is in good standing. They are a temporary, personal licence, not a copy you own, and may stop working if your account is closed or a story is removed.
Comments and reviews
Teens and adults can post comments and ratings. What you post is yours, but by posting you give Moonlit a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to host, display, adapt for display and distribute it within the Service, and to keep it for as long as it remains part of a discussion. You promise you have the right to post it and that it follows our Community Guidelines.
We do not read every comment before it appears. We may remove or hide content, and suspend accounts, that break our rules or that we reasonably think could cause harm. Comments express their writers’ views, not ours.
Our content and your rights in it
Stories belong to their writers, and Moonlit and its licensors own the Service, the Moonlit name, logo, design and software. We give you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the app and read stories for your own non-commercial use. Everything else is reserved.
If you believe something on Moonlit infringes your copyright or other rights, use the report button or contact us with the details: what the work is, where it appears on Moonlit, and why you believe you hold the rights. We act on credible claims quickly and may remove content, and close the accounts of repeat infringers, while we look into them.
Third-party services
Moonlit relies on services we do not control, such as Google Play, the Apple App Store, Google sign-in and ad networks. Their own terms apply when you use them, and we are not responsible for them.
Changes to the Service
We update Moonlit often. We may add, change or remove features, stories, coin packs or Premium benefits. If we stop providing something you have paid for and the law requires it, we will make it right, for example with a refund or replacement coins.
Suspension and ending your use
You may stop using Moonlit at any time. We may warn, restrict, suspend or close an account, remove content, or end access to the Service if you break these terms, put others at risk, misuse payments or ads, or if the law requires. Where reasonable, we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond. Anything that by its nature should continue after your account ends (such as ownership, payments already made, and limits on our liability) does.
What we promise, and what we do not
We work hard to keep Moonlit running and safe, but we provide it “as is” and “as available”. We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that every story will always be available, or that a story will suit you.
To the fullest extent the law allows, Moonlit is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of data or profit, or for what other users or writers post. Our total liability to you for anything arising from the Service is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or the equivalent of USD 50. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or your rights as a consumer.
You agree to compensate us for loss caused by your breach of these terms or your unlawful use of the Service, to the extent the law allows. This does not apply to Kids accounts or to anyone who is a minor in their country.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. If we cannot settle a dispute informally, the courts of Nigeria have jurisdiction, but this does not remove any mandatory consumer protection you have under the law of the country where you live, or your right to bring a claim in your local courts where the law gives you that right.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change is significant we will tell you in the app and ask you to accept the new version before it takes effect. If you do not agree, you can stop using Moonlit and delete your account. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force. These terms and the documents they refer to are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service.
