Kids Policy

How Moonlit keeps readers under 13 safe and what little we collect about them. Written for children and for their parents and guardians.
Who this is for
This policy is for readers under 13 and for their parents or guardians. If the reader on your phone is under 13, Moonlit gives them a Kids account. Parents and guardians: please read this together with your child, and keep a copy of our Privacy Policy and Child Safety page too.
For children
Moonlit is a place to read stories, and we want it to be safe and fun. Here is what that means:
- Moonlit only shows you stories made for kids.
- There are no ads, no chatting with strangers and no buying things.
- You cannot write or read comments.
- If something in a story makes you uncomfortable, close the app and tell a grown-up you trust. A grown-up can also report the story to us.
What we collect about children
Only what we need to run the app:
- the birthday you give, which we turn into an age band so we show the right stories;
- gender, if you choose to share it, which we use only to improve recommendations;
- reading progress, such as which stories and chapters you opened, saved or liked, and the genres you pick;
- technical information needed to keep the app working and secure, such as a device identifier, the app version, and error reports about what went wrong.
We do not ask children for their name, address, phone number, photos, school or location. If a parent contacts us, we use their contact details only to reply.
What Kids accounts do not have
- No ads, and no advertising identifiers or advertising profiles.
- No tracking for marketing. We do not use a child’s activity to build a profile for advertising or to follow them across apps and websites. Error reports are used only to fix problems.
- No comments. Children cannot post, read or like comments, and there is no way to message other users.
- No ratings or reviews.
- No push notifications.
- No purchases. There are no coins, no Premium and no way to spend money. Every story shown to a Kids account is free to read.
Which stories children see
Kids accounts only see stories rated Kids only. These are written for children and are hidden from teens and adults. Each story is checked by our editors before it is published, and we automatically flag stories whose content looks stronger than their rating. See our Content Ratings page for what Kids only means.
How we decide a reader is a child
We ask for a date of birth when someone starts. We rely on it, and a person can give a wrong one, which is why a parent’s help matters. If you think a Kids account belongs to someone older, or an older account to a child, contact us and we will correct it after checking. If a child gave the wrong birthday, tell us and we will fix it.
Your rights as a parent or guardian
You can ask us to:
- show you the information we hold about your child;
- correct it;
- delete it;
- close the Kids account.
Contact us through Help & Support in the app, or the details on our website, and tell us which account you mean. We may ask you to confirm that you are the child’s parent or guardian before we act, to protect the child. If you are unhappy with our answer you can complain to your data protection regulator.
Keeping children’s data safe
We keep children’s data only while the account is open, protect it with the same safeguards as all other data, and delete it when the account is deleted. We do not sell it, and we do not share it with advertisers. We share it only with the service providers who run Moonlit for us (for example hosting and error monitoring), under contracts that restrict their use of it, or with the authorities where the law requires or to protect a child.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. If we make a significant change we will ask for acceptance again in the app before it takes effect.
