Community Guidelines
Last updated
Moonlit is a place to read and talk about stories. These guidelines apply to comments, ratings and reviews, profiles and anything else you share, and to the stories writers publish.
Why we have guidelines
Stories are better when readers feel safe sharing what they think of them. These guidelines explain what is welcome on Moonlit and what is not. They apply to everything you post: comments, ratings and reviews, your display name, reports you send, and what writers publish. Kids accounts cannot post at all.
What we expect of everyone
Be respectful
Criticise the writing, not the person. Disagree freely, but without harassment, threats, insults, bullying or pile-ons. Treat other readers and writers the way you would like to be treated.
Mark spoilers
Paragraph comments are visible to anyone reading that chapter. Use the spoiler option for anything that happens later in the story, and avoid revealing endings in your reviews.
Keep it safe
Do not post:
- sexual content involving minors, or anything that sexualises children, in any form. This is reported to the authorities;
- hate speech, or content that attacks people for their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, caste, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age or health;
- threats, incitement to violence, or praise of violent groups or acts;
- content that encourages or glorifies self-harm, suicide or eating disorders. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to someone you trust or a local crisis line;
- personal information about anyone, including addresses, phone numbers, photos or private messages (doxxing);
- sexually explicit images or links to explicit sites. Mature themes in Adult only stories belong inside those stories and their warnings, not in comments;
- spam, advertising, scams, links that try to take your data, or requests for money;
- anything illegal, or anything that infringes someone else’s rights.
Be honest
Do not impersonate other people or writers, post fake or paid-for reviews, or manipulate ratings. Do not misuse reports to silence someone you simply disagree with.
Writers
Writers must also follow the Writer Content Agreement. Stories must carry an accurate age rating and content warnings. Content that is misrated, copied, or that breaks the rules above can be re-rated, hidden or removed.
Reporting
Tap the flag on any comment, or the report button on a story page, to report it. You can also contact us from Help & Support. Reports are confidential: the person you report is not told who reported them. Our moderators review reports and aim to look at them within 24 hours. Anything that puts a child at risk is dealt with first.
What happens when guidelines are broken
We consider how serious the breach is, whether it was deliberate, and whether it is a first offence. Depending on that, we may:
- remove or hide the content;
- warn you;
- limit your ability to comment or rate for a time;
- suspend or close your account;
- report the matter to the authorities, where children are at risk or the law requires.
Serious breaches, such as anything involving the exploitation of children, lead straight to a permanent ban and a report.
If you disagree
If you think we made a mistake, reply to the message we sent you or use Help & Support, and a different team member will take another look. We cannot always restore content, but we will always explain our decision.
Changes
We may update these guidelines as Moonlit grows. If a change is significant we will tell you in the app and ask you to accept the new version.
